Honoring Powerful Women Artists

International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time in the United States in 1909, honoring the 1908 garment women workers’ strike. Since then, it has become a global celebration of women’s achievement – social, economic, political, cultural, etc.

As strong believers in creativity and artistic pursuit, we are joining the celebration and dedicate this week’s blog post to women artists everywhere. At Geographics.com, we strive to offer beautiful paper products – from elegant or playful Geographics Design Paper that is a practical, and affordable product while encouraging creativity to indispensable business stationery such as Business Cards, Business Letterhead and Business Envelopes.

To show appreciation for a special woman in your life, mother, teacher or role model, have a look at our rich collection of Geographics Award Certificates.

Art can be defined in many ways – for painter Georgia O’Keeffe, art meant “Filling a space in a beautiful way.”

Visual artist Favianna Rodriguez talked in her essay Change the Culture, Change the World, about art as having a role in social change:

“You may attend a rally or vote, but you also read books, listen to music, engage with visual art, turn on the radio and create your identity through culture. Artists are central, not peripheral, to social change. To have the movements that make the wave, you need cultural workers.”

On our list of favorite women artists, we’ve included strong female figures that have seen and used art both as a way of infusing beauty into the world but also as a way of making strong, sometimes controversial statements about the world. Hopefully, the list will spark your curiosity to learn more about these strong female figures and their work.
